On December 17, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) declared that Russian athletes were not allowed to attend international tournaments until December 16, 2022.

CAS’s sentence is reduced by two years compared to the one that the World Doping Prevention Agency (WADA) gave to Russian sports last year. Thus, Russian sports will not be able to attend the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2020 Tokyo Disability Sports Congress (scheduled to take place in 2021), the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, the Russian football team will still be present in the Euro finals next year, as this is a continental tournament.

CAS asserted that the reduced sentence was not related to the nature of the violation of the law by Russian officials and athletes.

The CAS ruling said: “There are clear consequences that reflect the nature and severity of non-compliance from Russia. This ruling is aimed at ensuring the integrity of sport in the face of scandals. doping It is viewed on the basis of fairness, necessary to induce cultural change and to encourage the next generation of Russian athletes to compete in a pure way.

In January 2019, WADA announced that the Russian Agency for Doping Prevention (RUSADA) manipulated the data of banned substances from athletes in this country. RUSADA’s behavior has concealed many of the violations of the use of doping by Russian athletes, which lasted for many years. WADA asserted that Russia had a large-scale doping fraud scheme and made it blatant.

During the period of the CAS ban in effect, Russian players who have proven that they are not involved in doping have the right to participate in international tournaments, as neutral athletes. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, 168 Russian athletes attended the tournament in this capacity. For the next two years, Russia may not host international sporting events. The Russian national anthem and national flag are also absent from official tournaments.
