MexicoAmerican golfer Rickie Fowler saved 8 strokes across 8 holes, but spent eight strokes in one hole in the first round of the PGA Tour Mayakoba Classic event on December 3.
The tournament took place on the par71 course of El Camaleon Golf Club with a prize fund of 7.2 million USD. Fowler started out in hole 10 and got off to a good start with birdies in both holes. But into hole 12, 462 yards long, he had a quadruple bogey disaster – losing eight in total to the par4.
At the beginning of this hole, Fowler lost the ball, so he had to play again with a free stick. Then, the golfer was born in 1988 twice hit the desert, one more time lost the ball with a second penalty stick. At the end of the hole, he caught the rough grass, so it was not favorable to the green and so it took two shots to finish the job.
“At the top of that hole, I swung the driver well but the ball contact was a bit off at the tip of the club. There was another blow. After that, I kept hitting around,” Fowler explained about the pit crash in hole 12. After this hole, he added six birdies, a bogey and a double bogey and then closed the round of 70 strokes, temporarily standing T36 with a score of -1.
“In the first round of 2013, I doubled bogey in hole 1 and 10, but still 68 strokes. Today is the best achievement when quadruple bogey,” Fowler said.
PGA Tour statistics show that, with 70 strokes at El Camaleon Golf Club yesterday, Fowler got a negative score for the first time, despite double bogey or worse over 885 rounds.
Fowler has been playing professionally since 2009, and now owns five PGA Tour titles. In all of the traditional major quartets, though, Fowler has only finished top 3 for four times but has not yet won the championship. From the beginning of this year, he struggled to find his form and only achieved the highest achievement in T28 in the CJ Cup in October.
The Mayakoba Classic is the penultimate event on the 2020 PGA Tour calendar. The event champion gets tickets to Masters in April next year. The top of the group after the first round belongs to Russell Knox at -6. Opening day record Brendan Steele recorded albatross at 13 par5 hole, 532 yards long. This is the equivalent of a hole-in-one in a par4 hole or two strokes complete the par5 hole with a hit probability of 1 / 6,000,000 hits.
Most of the hole-in-one occurs in the par3 hole. The probability of a par3 hole-in-one hole at the professional level is 1 / 3,000 shots, the average amateur is 1 / 12,000, according to the National HIO Registry, USA.
