The CME Group Tour Championship and the $ 3 million prize fund in Florida will close the 71st season of the American women’s golf arena.
The tournament kicked off on December 17 on the par72 course of the Tiburon Golf Club, with Kim Sei Young being the current champion. Last year, Korean golfer won at -18, earning a million USD.
Normally, the curtain-down event for the top 60 Race to CME Globe scorecards spanned the same season as FedEx Cup at the PGA Tour. But the epidemic left the LPGA Tour to 18 awards, equivalent to 50% of the original schedule.
Therefore, the host organization decided to open the Tour Championship list to top 70 all season races and add two more spots for the title sponsor. All strokes crossed 72 holes, did not cut and the champion won 1.1 million USD.
This year’s tournament featured eight players in the top 10 in the world, including number one Ko Jin Young. The Korean player, born in 1995, returned to Seoul to recover and then had to avoid the epidemic until November 19 to rematch. At that time, Ko could not get tickets to Tiburon. However, thanks to its high performance through three recent events, including T2 at the major US Women’s Open on December 14, Ko holds a spot at the end of the season with 45th place on the Race to CME Globe scoreboard.
Last season, Ko returned to T11 in the Tour Championship, and Kim went to the podium thanks to a 7.6-meter drop to score the birdie at the end of the tournament. But before the grand final, Ko won the “Excellent Golfer” award, leading Race to CME Globe. After the closing event, Ko won another Vare Trophy for golfer who ranked first in average achievement over 18 holes, top of the bonus rankings and standard green rate. For the whole season, Ko owned four championships, two major and eight times top 10.
This season, the “Excellent Golfer” front is led by Inbee Park. In this award, the golfer accumulates points from the beginning of the year, of which the champion gets 30 points, comes in second with 12 points, the third has 9 points and then the points drop steadily to 10th place.
Park is 112 points, Kim Sei Young 106 points, and Danielle Kang is third with 87 points. The difference is quite large, but Kang is still open to the prize, if Park does not enter the top 6, Kim is no better than third in the final Tour Championship.
In normal years Vare Trophy campaigns, golfers must hit at least 70 rounds to compare their achievements. This year, the season is cut short because of the epidemic so the condition is minimal at 48 rounds. Averaging 68,677 strokes per round, Kim is at the top of the nominee list, followed by Brooke Henderson – 69,727, and Park is third with 69,927.
