Gidey set a new world record at Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium in Hengelo Netherlands, during the Ethiopian track and field selection competition for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This is only the fourth official 10,000m run in Gidey’s career. The previous three races took place in 2019. She last competed in this distance at the world championships in Doha, Qatar and finished second with a time of 30:21.23. Gidey needed just one more second to be the first female athlete to cross the 29-minute mark.
Gidey’s score of 29:01.04 is nearly 1 minute better than the European record set by the legendary Paula Radcliffe (UK) in Munich (Germany) in 2002. Letesenbet Gidey is only 23 years old, becoming the first female athlete to hold the world records in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events since the legendary Ingrid Kristiansen (Norway) 30 years ago.
