Hanako Kawasaki, with a Vietnamese mother and a Japanese father, became the first player from Vietnam to compete in the main round of the world’s top prestigious women’s amateur golf event.

The US Women’s Amateur, organized by the American Golf Association (USGA) since 1895, is considered the “major female amateur”, alongside the British Ladies Amateur. This year’s tournament, in the 121st tournament, takes place at Westchester Country Club, New York from August 2-8. To close the list for the main event, the USGA held 26 qualifiers across the US.

During the competition in Boston on July 12, Hanako finished first at even par on par71, set at 6,001 yards. In this match, the Vietnamese-Japanese golfer scored four birdies and four bogeys, although he had not tried and only grasped the battlefield through notes from his teammates on the Boston University golf team.

“I was a bit confused when I hit the first few holes, but then gradually regained my confidence. So I boldly aimed at the middle of the fairway and played and then hit the green with a short iron or wedge. This tactic worked. . At first, I just wanted to play well. Now the results are beyond expectations,” Hanako said about the psychology and how to play at Boston Golf Club.

The course has three par5 holes, of which Hanako birdie one hole, the rest keep par, including the most difficult “stage” of the tournament – ​​hole 15, 495 yards long with 13 bogeys, 18 double bogeys and an average of 5.93 strokes.

Hanako is majoring in Business Administration, belongs to Boston University golf team under the guidance of Coach Bruce Chalas. In 2019, she won the “Excellent Golfer” and “Excellent Rookie” award of the Patriot League – a group of athletes from major schools in the US including several branches of the Army and Navy sports academies.

Hanako was born in 1999, has won the National Women’s Championship three times organized by the Vietnam Golf Association.

US Women’s Amateur regardless of nationality, age but handicap limit (handicap) – up to 5.4. The main tournament consists of stroke play through 36 holes, selecting 64 golfers for match play. During this period, each match went through 18 holes, and the final went through 36 holes.
