Nelly Korda, Ko Jin Young scored +3 and +1 respectively on the par71 field of the first round of the Evian Championship women’s major on July 22.
Thanks to the Women’s PGA Championship, Korda replaced Ko to hold the top of the Rolex Rankings from May 28. But the two have not shown enough form in the opening match of the Evian Championship with a $4.5 million prize fund at Lake Geneva, near the Franco-Swiss border.
Yesterday, Korda started on the 10th hole, scoring one birdie, two bogeys in the first half. In the first half of the course, she added a birdie but to three bogeys, including the pass of the last hole – hole 9, par5. At this stage, Korda got into a bunker on her second shot. The ball was close to the trap wall, Korda still tried to escape in the third shot, but the clubhead “cracked the ground” so it became “slash”.
The American golfer gets to the edge of the green on his fourth shot and then closes the hole after two putts.
In terms of professional performance, Korda was fine from start to green – 267 yards at two pegs recorded first-hit averages, hitting nine of the 13 fairways and hitting the 12-hole GIR, twice. Escape the bunker in one hit. But the player born in 1998 is not “sharpened” in the face of the hole – 32 putts in total. After the match, she stood at T99, nine strokes from the top of the table.
Meanwhile, Ko also finished the second half of the field with a birdie and two bogeys, with the rest adding three birdies to make up for the bogey. Korean player like Korda in putt and GIR, shot nine yards shorter, hit less than one fairway. With 72 strokes, Ko stands at T76 (point +1).
In 2019, Ko won the Evian Championship at -15 points on the same court, and Korda finished T25 – the highest through the third major competition co-sponsored by the LPGA and Ladies European Tour. The 2020 tournament was postponed because of Covid-19. After these 18 holes, Yealimi Noh and Pajaree Anannarukarn lead at -6. Noh scored an eagle on the first round, bogey on the fourth and five birdies on the 65-stroke scoreboard. Anannarukarn no bogey, to six birdies.
International women’s professional golf reached five majors when the Evian Championship – an event founded in 1994 – was upgraded from 2013, alongside the ANA Inspiration, US Women’s Open, Women’s PGA Championship. After the appearance of the fifth major, the LPGA Tour has not yet recorded a player reaching the grand slam milestone – carrying a set of prestigious events. Currently, only Inbee Park from Korea can achieve this rare achievement. But the opportunity for Park is low due to the T56 position, right at the expected even par cutoff line.
