Royal & Ancient (R&A) hopes to have a “remarkable” number of fieldgoers in the major they own and organize.
This expectation is clearly stated in a message on social media on May 11 from R&A CEO Martin Slumbers. Slumbers said R&A believes The Open Championship 2021 will be successful thanks to the positive changes in Covid-19 prevention and deployment in the UK.
However, the organizers have not given the expected number of fans entering the stadium every day or the ceiling for the whole event.
“It depends on the government’s decision to The Open, such as social segregation, testing and certification of vaccinations,” explained R&A leaders. This organization and the American Golf Association (USGA) coordinate the management and development of golf world.
The customary men’s major quartet in turn includes Masters exclusively organized by Augusta National, the PGA Championship of the American Professional Golf Association (PGAA), the US Open under the USGA and The Open Championship. Last year, after the outbreak, only major of the R&A was canceled. And so, Shane Lowry, crowned in 2019, is still the current champion.
This year, all four competitions are back on track, with the Masters taking place in April, the PGA Championship May 20-23, the US Open in June, and The Open in July.
This season, Augusta National limited audience. The PGAA expects 10,000 people to enter the field per day. The USGA just “opened the door” and asked Californians to present a negative certificate or have received the Covid-19 vaccine, while out-of-state residents must have a “vaccinated” certificate.
