AmericaBy improvisation, Sam Burns monopolized the top of the table at -12 points after 36 holes at the PGA Tour event bringing together eight players in the top 10 in the world.

“I have to play patiently, I do not pressure my own results. How difficult the field will be to overcome it,” Burns summarized the strategy of the title war of the 120 invited golfers in Southern California.

Burns has changed in form since the opening day of February 18. That day, he scored one eagle, seven birdies and two bogeys in a 64-stroke round on the Riviera, par71. With that achievement, Burns reached the top of the board at -7 with a two-stroke lead.

Yesterday, he still held the position by hitting 66 strokes with a score of five birdies and no bogey. But the distance between him and the T2 group is up to five strokes. This group consists of four players, including world number one Dustin Johnson. Of the eight players in the top 10 in the world (OWGR) initially competing, three people were eliminated including Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau.

Over the two days, Burns averaged 250.5 yards and 308.5 yards, but the fairway hit rates were below average. Even so, he maintained a 12-hole green move.

This is a result of a stick exercise with 10 shots per session and then an effective score based on the distance the ball is from the target. “Maximum 10 points per shot. A few years ago I tried to hit 85 points. Now it goes up to 90. If I don’t, I practice again,” Burns says of his performance training to the green.

Burns was born in 1996, through three years of professional golf, including two years at the PGA Tour. After 69 events, Burns has not won in eight top ten finishes. This season alone, he returned to T7 twice, one occasion in the top group after 54 holes but ultimately T18 final. Burns is currently ranked at 149 OWGR.
