Charles Howell III never won the Sony Open, but received the most prize in 56 years of PGA Tour history in Hawaii.

Howell III was born in 1979, has been playing professionally since 2000 and won three trophies at the PGA Tour. Particularly at the Sony Open, he earned a total of 2,948,281 USD thanks to never being cut through 19 times for the title, of which 10 times finished the top 10.

“I won this tournament and I almost won it a couple of times. I will definitely never miss it if I get a spot,” Howell III said on January 12 about the results at the Sony Open.

Over the last five Sony Open periods, Howell III scored an overall -58 – the deepest sound level among competitors participating in the tournament at the same time.

Howell III has twice missed the chance to be crowned. In early 2007, he won his first championship in six years at the PGA Tour. At that time, he attended the Sony Open and had an excellent record in the penultimate round – 65 strokes and one stroke of advantage after 54 holes. But in the last round, he missed the chance of birdie hole 18, par5, closing the record 70 strokes on the par70 and back to T2 with a score of -13, and Paul Goydos won at -14.

By 2012, Howell III was a heavyweight candidate, but 69 on the last day made him one more hit T2, two strokes less than champion Johnson Wagner.

Last year, Cameron Smith won at -11 with a bonus of 1,188 million USD and Howell III to T12 (-6), received $ 116,000.

The Sony Open 2021 started on January 14, still on the par70 of the Waialae Country Club on the island of Honolulu with a bonus fund of 6.6 million USD. Prize established in 1965, with the predecessor is the Hawaiian Open.

In 2018, the tournament recorded panic over the news “a ballistic missile is heading towards Hawaii”. However, later, the local authorities confirmed it was a false alarm due to the system administrator’s error. That year, the Sony Open title belonged to Patton Kizzire at -17 while Howell III stood at T32.
