AmericaPlayer Le Quang Liem earned six out of nine maximum points on the morning of August 15, to rise to eighth at the St Louis Super Prize.

Quang Liem and Hikaru Nakamura played most impressively in the first nine games of blitz, both earning six points. Vietnamese players earn 4.5 points after the first five matches. In the next four games, he lost his breath a bit when he only earned 1.5 points. But, that performance was enough to help Quang Liem get out of the last position. He is just one point behind Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in fifth place.

If he maintains his form on the last day of the blitz chess competition, Quang Liem can go up a few steps to increase the prize money.

In the first game, Quang Liem led the white piece to defeat Jeffery Xiong in the endgame with two horses and good balance. In the second game, he held the black piece but continued to beat Sam Shankland by pushing the d column well into the second row and threatening the queen. In the third game, Quang Liem took the white piece against Wesley So, and created a great advantage throughout the game. But, So took advantage of the opportunity to project invariant peace.

Quang Liem regained his winning streak in the fourth game, when he held the black piece to meet Peter Svidler. In a seemingly even endgame, Svidler ran out of time and lost. The next game Quang Liem also won when Leinier Dominguez ran out of time.

After drawing Mamedyarov in game six, Quang Liem received his first defeat of the day against world number two Fabiano Caruana. He beat Richard Rapport in the next game with the endgame and three pawns. In the last game, the number one player in Vietnam had a chance to win, but lost against Nakamura.

“I could have done better if I had won against Nakamura in game nine,” Quang Liem shared. “But I’m still very happy with today’s performance. I earned six points, equal to the total of the previous three test days. And anyway my goal was to get out of the last place, so today I went. complete mission”.

Also earning six points like Quang Liem, Nakamura held on to the top with 18 points before the final exam day. Caruana is second with 15.5 points. Rapport and So are behind with 14.5 and 14 points, respectively. Quang Liem has 12 points, ranked eighth. Shankland and Dominguez finished last, with 11.5 points. The rank of players in the last group will be shuffled after the last day.

If he finishes the tournament in eighth place, Quang Liem will receive $8,000. And if he climbs to fifth, he earns another $4,500. The prize fund of the prize is 150,000 USD, of which the first place receives 37,500 USD.

On the last day of the competition, 10 players played nine more games of blitz chess, from 3 am on 16/8, Hanoi time.
