AmericaChess player Le Quang Liem started to play the lightning fast St Louis at 3 am on 12/8 (Hanoi time), in turn met Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
Quang Liem will take the black piece to meet the world number nine Wesley So. This pairing recreates the final of the Chessable Masters online fast chess tournament on August 8, when So Ha Quang Liem with the score after two days of competition was 1.5-0.5.

At 4:30 on the same day, Quang Liem led the white army to meet Caruana – the number two player in the world. In the Superbet tournament in Romania in November 2019, Quang Liem also held a white piece to meet Caruana in fast chess but failed.
The last game of the first day of the competition took place at 6 o’clock, when Quang Liem held the black piece and met the world number six Mamedyarov. Also in the Superbet tournament, Quang Liem drew with Mamedyarov while holding a white piece.
“I haven’t played any chess tournament on the board in the past 18 months,” Quang Liem said at the opening ceremony. “Playing chess is very different from playing online, and I prefer to play on the board. So I have a lot of heart to play against the top players in this tournament.”
The St Louis Rapid Tournament is the fourth stage of the Grand Chess Tour 2021 system, and is the first time Quang Liem has been invited. He didn’t have to move too much to attend the tournament, while living in St Louis. The nine players left to go to St Louis are Caruana, Mamedyarov, So, Richard Rapport, Leinier Dominguez, Hikaru Nakamura, Sam Shankland, Peter Svidler and Jeffery Xiong.
Each player has 25 minutes for the game, adding 10 seconds after each move in fast chess. Each day they play three quick games of chess, 90 minutes apart, from August 12 to August 14. Blitz chess content takes place on August 15 and August 16, nine games a day. Each game won quickly two points, draw one point. And winning the blitz chess gets 1 point, draw 0.5 points.
The prize fund of the St Louis fast chess tournament is 150,000 USD, of which the first person receives 37,500 USD. The prize money gradually decreases until the last place is 6,000 USD.
