Chess player Le Quang Liem was invited to the Tepe Sigeman chess tournament, where he played for former chess king Anatoly Karpov in Sweden at the end of April 2021.
The organizers announced on March 3 that the standard chess tournament Tepe Sigeman will take place from April 24 to April 30 in Malmo, Sweden. The eight participating players included Quang Liem (Elo 2.709), Jorden van Foreest (2,701), David Navara (2,697), Nils Grandelius (2,670), Alexei Shirov (2,662), Nihal Sarin (2,620), Karpov (2,617) and Harika Dronavalli (2,515).

Quang Liem is the number one seed, but the focus is on Karpov – the world champion in the 1975-1985 period. He will attend Tepe Sigeman at the age of 69, with each game lasting up to five hours. Sweden was the first country outside the former Soviet Union Karpov to compete in the 1969 World U20 tournament. Chess24 considered the sixth greatest chess player in chess history, after Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen, Bobby Fischer, Emanuel Lasker and Alexander Alekhine.
Quang Liem never competed with Karpov in chess tournaments. Only the second Vietnamese chess player – Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son – ever fought Karpov’s mind at the Cap d’Agde tournament in October 2010. At that time, Truong Son took the black army, winning Karpov after 74 moves.
Tepe Sigeman took place at the same time Candidates – the tournament selected the chess player with Magnus Carlsen. Therefore, the world players are absent from the tournament. The 2020 prize was canceled because of Covid-19, when Karpov also accepted the invitation. The last time Karpov played the standard flag was a performance against Maxim Matlakov at the Russian team tournament in 2019.
Tepe Sigeman played a round-robin round of seven Swiss games. The playing time is 100 minutes for the first 40 countries, plus 15 minutes for the next 20 moves and 15 minutes for the rest of the game. After each move, the player gets an additional 30 seconds of thinking.
