Vietnam’s number one chess player, Le Quang Liem will compete against 15 of the world’s top players at the Skilling Open online fast chess tournament from November 22.
On November 20, the organizers Chess24 announced the last two players invited to the Skilling Open – the first prize of the Magnus Carlsen Tour 2020-2021 system. Lightning chess number one player Hikaru Nakamura and prodigy Alireza Firouzja participated, completing the identity of the 16 winners.

Besides Quang Liem, Nakamura and Firouzja, the remaining 13 players were Carlsen, Dinh Lap Nhan, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Levon Aronian, Wesley So, Teimour Radjabov, Anish Giri, Sergey Karjakin, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Vidit Gujrathi, Peter Svidler and David Anton.
The tournament brings together seven top 10 players and 15 top 30 players. Only Anton is outside the top 30 in terms of standard chess. The average Elo of 16 players is 2,758, of which Quang Liem is 15th with Elo 2,709. Considering the fast chess Elo, the HCM City player is ninth with Elo 2,744.
The matches circle once for three days, five games a day. Competition time 15 minutes, adding 10 seconds after each move. The top eight players will enter the quarterfinals, knocking out.
Competition day starts from 0am, Hanoi time. But Quang Liem is in America, so he will fight during the day.
On the first day, from 0:00 Monday, November 23, Hanoi time, Quang Liem met Aronian, Duda, Dinh, Giri and Karjakin respectively. Each game is separated by an hour. The match between Quang Liem and Dinh is expected, when both are the number one players in Vietnam and China.
On the second day, Quang Liem fought Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave, Gujrathi, So and Svidler respectively. The awaited match is Quang Liem reuniting Wesley So – who won Ho Chi Minh City’s chess player in the semifinals of the online blitz tournament Banter Series on September 27. Thanks to his deep in Banter Series, Quang Liem was invited to the Skilling Open.
On the third day, Quang Liem ran into Nepomniachtchi, Carlsen, Radjabov, Anton and Firouzja. The most awaited opponent is Chess Carlsen.
The prize fund of the prize is 100,000 USD, the champion receives 30,000 USD, and the bonus fund of Magnus Carlsen Tour is up to 1.5 million USD. The second time Magnus Tour was held, after Carlsen won the first season. Tournament okay Eurosport live streaming in over 60 countries.
