Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr injured his eye and was forced to withdraw from his title defense match against Manny Pacquiao on August 21.

“I am very disappointed that I cannot fight with Pacquiao on August 21. I have been looking forward to this fight,” Spence said on August 10. “Unfortunately, the doctors discovered a tear in my left eye, and recommended that I have surgery as soon as possible. There is no way I can compete with this condition. I want to apply sorry everyone. But you know I’ll be back soon. I’ve been through worse situations.”

Spence is currently rated as one of the best boxers in the middleweight class with a record of winning 27 professional fights. In October 2019, the 31-year-old American boxer had a terrible car accident. He was admitted to the hospital unconscious, but did not suffer any damage to the bones of his head and brain, and recovered after about half a year. At the end of last year, Spence returned, defeating fellow boxer Danny Garcia by points, 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112, thereby successfully defending the WBC and IBF welterweight belts.

According to the schedule, Spence will defend the championship with Pacquiao on August 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. After Spence withdrew due to injury, Pacquiao sent his wishes to the opponent. The Filipino boxer said: “First of all, I want everyone to join me in praying for Errol’s full recovery. Thank God for helping the medical team discover Errol’s eye injury before he suffered further problems. hurt”.

After that, WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas was selected as the opponent to replace Errol in the ring with Pacquiao. Originally, Ugas was scheduled to fight Fabian Maidana in the side event of Pacquiao and Errol’s match. Pacquiao agrees with this option. He said: “I agree to fight with Ugas on August 21 to compete for the WBA welterweight championship.”

In September 2020, the 35-year-old Cuban boxer defeated Abel Ramos to win the WBA (Regular) welterweight belt, before being promoted WBA (Super) title. This is also the title he needs to defend against Pacquiao on August 21.

“It’s been an honor to be in the ring with multi-division champion Pacquiao, and I’m up for the challenge,” said Ugas. “I respect Pacquiao, but I will go into the ring with the goal of winning.”
