Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao will match Floyd Mayweather’s record of defeating 23 world champions, if he defeats Yordanis Ugas in the WBA welterweight title match on August 21.

Pacquiao will fight 72nd fight of his career. In the previous 71 matches, he won 62, including 39 knockouts, lost 7 and drew 2. Ugas has only played 30 matches, won 26, including 12 knockouts, and lost four. Photo: Sky Sports

The last time Pacquiao fought in the ring was on July 20, 2019, when he welterweight champion Keith Thurman equaled referee points. After 12 rounds without knock-out, the Filipino boxer was won by two referees with a score of 115-112. The other referee ruled Thurman won 114-113.

Thurman is the 22nd world champion that Pacquiao has beaten. Before that, the boxer born in 1978 defeated Chatchai Sasakul, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, Jorge Eliecer Julio, Marco Antonio Barrera (twice), Erik Morales (twice), Oscar Larios, Jorge Solis, Juan Manuel Marquez (twice), David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Brandon Rios, Timothy Bradley (twice), Chris Algieri, Jessie Vargas, Lucas Matthysse and Adrien Broner.

Pacquiao’s performance is currently only inferior to Mayweather – who has defeated 23 world champions in his professional career. In particular, Mayweather defeated Pacquiao himself in the unification match of the world welterweight championships (WBC, WBO, WBA) in 2015. At that time, after 12 rounds without knock-out, Mayweather won by referee points. 118-110, 116-112, 116-112.

The remaining “victims” of the American boxer are Genaro Hernandez, Gregorio Vargas, Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo (twice), Victoriano Sosa, DeMarcus Corley, Arturo Gatti, Sharmba Mitchell, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomi, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz, Miguel Cotto, Robert Guerrero, Canelo Alvarez, Marcos Maidana (twice), and Andre Berto.

“Nobody has beaten world champions more than me. Pacquiao could have broken this record, but it only happened because he competed professionally before me,” Mayweather commented after Pacquiao beat Thurman.

Pacquiao will equal Mayweather’s record if he defeats Yordenis Ugas in the ring at the T-Mobile ring, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on August 21. In September 2020, Ugas defeated Abel Ramos to win the WBA (Regular) welterweight title, before being promoted to the WBA (Super) title. This is also the title of the 35-year-old Cuban boxer to defend in the match against Pacquiao on August 21.

“I know Coach Freddie Roach said I’m going to win by knockout. I feel like I’m 24. Roach sees me training with discipline and enthusiasm. But I don’t want to make predictions about the next match, just trying to do my best,” Pacquiao said on August 18 at a pre-match press conference.

Ugas is confident that he can hold Pacquiao to all 12 points and win the referee’s point. He said: “I’m 100% sure Pacquiao can’t win by knockout. I’ve been training for the past six years, and I’ve improved a lot. I’m ready for 12 tough rounds. If this is Pacquiao’s last fight, Before he retires, he will have to face a world-class fighter and always give his best.”
