This result leaves Mickelson with the worst round of the traditional major quartet in the past three years, just after 81 strokes on the penultimate day of the US Open 2018 with the reputation of “dribbling” even though it was still rolling on the green. As for the 26 times to attend The Open annually, Mickelson met the peak of the disaster round in 1998 – 85 strokes at Royal Birkdale, par71. That year, he was disqualified.

Yesterday, Mickelson entered the game well with a start from the 1st, par4 hole to the left of the fairway while the two players in the same group got lost in the rough on the right from naturally growing buffalo tail grass. He went to the green on the second shot, 3.6 meters away but didn’t birdie due to a missed putt. Keeping par on both opening holes, Mickelson started a three-bogey streak from hole 3. Having closed the fourth hole, he yanked at the back of his hat with a weary look.

Then when the putt failed to find a birdie 3.6 meters away on the 6th hole, the American golfer born in 1970 grabbed the two ends of the putter and broke it. When the ball circled the rim of the hole after the putt kept par 3.3 meters away, Mickelson arched back and opened his mouth, revealing regret.

On the 18th, par4, he had nine pars, eight bogeys. But the final entry into the rough, the third 10 yards from the green. From there, Mickelson chipped in, added two more putts to get the job done – double bogey then placed T155 – bottom of the 156-player overall scoreboard. Besides him, only Deyen Lawson remained in this position.

Through 29 years of playing professionally, Mickelson won a total of 45 PGA Tour championships, including six majors, including The Open 2013. Ten years ago, the R&A major was also at Royal St. George’s recorded him in second place.

On May 23, Mickelson won the PGA Championship at the age of 51 two months. With his sixth major, he became the oldest major champion.
