Golfer pays his children’s tuition with prize money

Sowards finished T5 at the Senior PGA Championship 2021 – a senior major organized by the American Professional Golf Association on the Southern Hills course. The event closed on May 31, Hanoi time. Sowards received $106,000 in prize money.

He shared with the Organizing Committee that this money will help cover tuition fees for Jordan – his daughter entered Arizona State University this fall. “The tuition is very expensive,” Sowards confided on Golfweek. He is working as a coaching director at Kinsale Stadium, Ohio.

The 52-year-old golfer told how he almost dropped out to attend his daughter’s high school graduation. But Lynn – his wife – advised her husband to keep attending the event because maybe he would receive a good amount of money from his high achievements to reduce the financial burden for his children on the way to education.

“She’s the boss. And I did a good job,” Sowards wittily.

At this year’s Senior PGA Championship, Sowards seemed to have the money to pack until his son graduated from college. On opening day, he kept the top of the table. In the second round, he sometimes led two strokes, but the last few holes Sowards fell in form, so he closed the game at T18 position after 36 holes.

The penultimate leg, the player born in 1968 to T10. Thanks to 67 strokes in the closing match similar to the first day, Sowards reached T5 in the end with a score of -1. Alex Cejka won at -8, holding $ 585,000.

Sowards entered professional golf in 1991. It was not until 17 years later that he entered the PGA Tour for the first time through the qualifying group. “That prize, I pocketed 120,000 USD. And the money from the major champion this period is the biggest income I have earned since turning 50,” Sowards confided.
