RussiaMagnus Carlsen’s journey to win the first World Cup was stopped by Polish opponent Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the semi-finals on the evening of August 3.
After drawing both standard chess games, Carlsen and Duda separated by a series of quick chess games on the evening of August 3. Duda took white in the first quick game, but only drew. “This defeat hurts,” Carlsen wrote Twitter. “But I also congratulate Duda and Karjakin for reaching the final. I am also pleased with my progress in this tournament. That will help a lot for the defense of the Chess King at the end.”
Carlsen continued to be ungrateful with the World Cup, having never reached the final in this knockout tournament. Through 11 World Cups, Carlsen has only participated in four times in 2005, 2007, 2017 and 2021. His best performance is the semi-finals in 2007 and 2021. The World Chess Cup takes place every two years, bringing together 128 knockout players. Each ceiling consists of two standard chess games, changing the color of pieces. If there is a tie, the two players take turns to play two more quick games, then two more blitz games.
