RussiaThe Candidates Chess Championship returns today April 19 with a mind match between top seed Fabiano Caruana and leader Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
At 6 p.m. Hanoi time, four pairs of the eighth round took place simultaneously in the city of Ekaterinburg, Russia. Caruana holds the white army against Vachier-Lagrave – the leading player with 4.5 points with Ian Nepomniachtchi. Caruana is the top candidate to challenge Chess King Magnus Carlsen, but is only in the back group with 3.5 points.
Nepomniachtchi had a chance to jump up when the white army met Anish Giri. Nepomniachtchi won against the Dutch flag in the first round while holding black. But Giri’s high performance recently makes the home player’s task not easy. Giri also has 3.5 points like Caruana, and showed his determination to win at Candidates this year.
The other two pairs are held internally by China and Russia. Wang Hao suddenly won the number one Chinese player Dinh Lap Nhan in game one, despite holding black. This time, Dinh had a chance to claim Vuong’s debt. Alexander Grischuk is expected to win the first game, after a series of seven draws, when he meets the youngest player in the tournament, Kirill Alekseenko.
Each player gets 100 minutes of thinking, giving the first 40 moves, adding 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes from the 61st move. After each move, the players get an additional 30 seconds. Two players with points will rank in turn according to the criteria: Confrontation, number of wins, SB coefficient, fast tie-break for the number one position.
Candidates winner will compete for the throne with Carlsen, scheduled in November and December this year. Carlsen has held the throne since 2013.
