On January 14, Brazilian police arrested Ángel Cabrera for extradition to his homeland of Argentina and then prosecuted for many crimes.
Cabrera was born in 1969, has been playing professional golf since 1989 and is considered the most successful player in South America. He owns two major in three PGA Tour championships, in addition to five European Tour trophies.
Belonging to Interpol’s “red code”, Cabrera was arrested yesterday in a luxury residential area in Rio de Janeiro by order of the Supreme Court of Brazil. The local police report only said they arrested a 51-year-old Argentine. However, two internal staff confirmed with AP that the suspect is Cabrera. They requested anonymity because they did not have the authority to speak.
Argentine officials accused him of intimidation, assault, theft and repeated contempt for the authorities for illegal acts in the 2016-2019 period.
Earlier this year, Argentine media reported that his ex-wife Silva Rivadero had filed a denunciation against Cabrera. Ex-girlfriend Cecilia Torres also accused him of beating, threatening and chasing after using a private car in 2016.
At the 2007 US Open, Cabrera won by one stroke from Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. Two years later, he won the Masters by defeating Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry through two sub holes. In 2013, he finished second in the exclusive major of Augusta National Stadium by losing to Adam Scott after two extra holes.
Cabrera won Masters 2020 in November, but dropped out due to a left wrist injury. The whole season, he attended nine events in the old Champions arena and were eliminated, but the top achievement was only at T27.
