Bobby Fischer played only one match, but is still considered one of the three greatest players in history. His victory over Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1972 is considered the match of the century. Fischer put an end to 24 years of Soviet domination in the chess scene, beating Spassky 12.5-8.5.

Fischer is the inspiration for the character Beth Harmon in the novel and Series The Queen’s Gambit above Netflix. At the top, Fischer outperformed the competition. He attended the US Championship eight times, and both won. On the way to the match with Spassky, Fischer defeated Mark Taimanov, Bent Larsen and Tigran Petrosian with 6-0, 6-0 and 6.5-2.5 respectively.

Fischer was born in 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. In 1975, he lost the throne of Chess due to his refusal to fight Karpov. Since then, he has not appeared in any competition for the throne, and also rarely appeared in super tournaments. Fischer died on January 17, 2008 in Reykjavik.
